USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The No. 24 Bulldogs lost 6-2 in the first game of Saturday’s inclement weather induced doubleheader versus Air Force at Falcon Field. After playing six complete innings of game two that started at 3:30 p.m. MT, play was suspended due to darkness. Fresno State holds a 6-5 lead.
Game two will pick up where it left off at 11 a.m. local time in the top of the seventh with Trent Woodward on deck. The series finale will follow immediately after the conclusion of game two.
In the opener that paired Bulldog ace Jordan Brink (2-1) against senior Cameron White (1-2), White got the better of Brink in an uncharacteristic outing for the junior righty. Brink allowed six runs (five earned) off of 10 hits in seven innings on the mound. Entering Saturday’s game, Brink owned a 0.42 ERA and had allowed just one run off six hits in 21 2/3 innings of work over his first three starts.
White struck out a career-high 10 in six innings, and allowed the only two runs the Bulldogs posted in game one.
Back-to-back reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, Taylor Ward, connected for his second home run of the season in the fourth against two outs to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first. Ward took a 1-1 offering and sailed it over the left field fence, nearly hitting the scoreboard, and drove home Jordan Luplow. Luplow led off the inning with an infield single.
As the designated hitter, Ward went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run.
After battling through the first and third innings without surrendering runs, Air Force broke through in the fifth, scoring four runs off five hits. Run number one was plated off a slow dribbler by senior Seth Kline toward the six-hole that allowed the runner on third to score. Back-to-back singles followed Kline’s infield single to bring up freshman Tyler Jones with the bases loaded. Jones delivered a bases clearing double to left center. All four runs for the Falcons came against two outs.
Air Force tacked on two more in the seventh off of three hits and an error.
Jones led the Falcons in the opener, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
The bats woke up in the second game of the doubleheader for the ’Dogs. Fresno State posted two runs in the third and four more in the sixth. Air Force answered back in the bottom half of the sixth with three runs of its own after plating single runs in the first and third.
Freshman Jake Stone posted his first career RBIs while getting his third career start. He is 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Freshman Austin Guibor also posted his first career hit and RBI in his first career start as a Bulldog in the sixth.
Fresno State holds a 6-5 lead in Saturday’s suspended game heading into Sunday. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. PT.
