Bulldogs Cruise Past Portland, 12-2

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman left hander Eddie Romero struck out a team season high 11 batters over six strong innings as Fresno State defeated Portland 12-2 Tuesday in the 26th Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
The Bulldogs won their season high tying third game in a row to improve to 9-12 on the season while the Pilots dropped to 1-11. Fresno State remained undefeated in the PJQ with a 2-0 mark and Portland slipped to .500 at 1-1.
Romero (1-0) scattered a run on three hits and four walks to earn his first career victory. Seven of his strikeouts came in the first three innings including a string of four punch outs in a row between the first and second.
Fresno State staked itself to a 6-0 lead after three innings, plating three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third. In the first, sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett hit a two-run triple and scored on a run scoring ground out from sophomore designated hitter Kent Sakamoto. Freshman De Andre Miller laced a two-run single to center in the second and Robnett socked his team high fourth home run to lead off the third. Robnett (3-5) also doubled in the fourth and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
In the fifth, Bulldog senior infielder Ryan Haag capped a four-run outburst his first home run of the season that hit the netting that protects the strength and conditioning center beyond the right field fence. Freshman outfielder Nick Moresi (3-4) notched his second straight three-hit game with a pair of doubles and a single.
Pilots' starter Jared Adams (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks in just an 1.2 innings. Jeffrey Crinklaw (2-3) and Rhett Parker (2-4) each turned in multi-hit performances to lead the club at the plate.
Fresno State plays host to the only other remaining undefeated team in the tournament, BYU Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on the third day of the 26th Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
