FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 20 Fresno State baseball team played its first ranked opponent of the 2011 season and defeated No. 30 CSU Bakersfield 9-2 Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (9-1) out hit the Roadrunners 12-10.
The Dogs pitching staff had another stellar game on the mound allowing only two runs to score and two walks. The pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.
Senior Garrett Weber was perfect at the plate hitting three-for-three with three RBIs. Second baseman Pat Hutcheson also had a multiple hit game against the Runners with two hits in three appearances at the dish.
The Bulldogs scored first in the bottom half of the first inning. Danny Muno reached base on an error by the Roadrunners third baseman. Brennan Gowens hit his fourth sacrifice bunt of the season moving Muno into scoring position. Weber singled to left field bringing Muno home and giving the Dogs the lead 1-0.
CSU Bakersfield threatened in the top of the third inning, but starter Tom Harlan struck out a Roadrunner batter to end the inning and leaving two Roadrunners stranded in scoring position.
Weber led off the fourth inning with his second hit of the night, a single to right field. Jordan Ribera reached second base on an error by the Runners first baseman and Weber advanced to third base on the play. The next at-bat Dusty Robinson grounded as Weber scored increasing the Dogs lead, 2-0.
The fourth inning continued with a single to center field from designated hitter Kenny Wise to put Bulldog runners on the corners. Sophomore Kaohu Gaspar drove in another run for the Dogs with a sacrifice fly to center field extending the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 over the Roadrunners.
CSU Bakersfield added two runs in the top of the fifth inning cutting the Dogs lead 3-2.
Fresno State answered in the fifth inning. Austin Wynns reached base after an error by the right fielder. Hutcheson singled to right field moving Wynns to third base. Muno hit a sacrifice fly bringing home a run and the Dogs stay on top 4-2.
Harlan threw five innings in his third start of the year. The lefty struck out five batters and walked two. Harlan has allowed three earned runs in a total of 17 innings pitched for an ERA of 1.59. He is 2-0 on the mound in 2011.
The inning stayed alive after Weber hit an RBI single up the middle increasing the Dogs lead 5-2 over the Roadrunners. Ribera added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run over the right field wall. The Bulldogs took at 7-2 lead into the sixth inning.
Kendall came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning. He recorded a strikeout and allowed not walks or runs.
In the sixth inning, Gaspar singled up the middle. Wynns reached on a fielder's choice as pinch runner Daniel Moultrie was tagged out at second base. Hutcheson bunted Wynns over to second base for his second hit of the game. Another error brought in the Bulldogs eighth run of the game.
The Dogs rally continued with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring a run for Fresno State increasing their lead 9-2 over the Roadrunners.
Josh Poytress struck out a Roadrunner batter for the final out of the game and the Dogs won 9-2.
