FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's right handed pitcher Clayton Allison (2-1, 4.15) threw four innings before giving up three runs in the top of the fifth as the Bulldogs went on to lose in a 4-1 final against the Santa Clara (12-11) Broncos at Beiden Field.
With no outs and two base runners on second and third the Bulldogs almost found their way out of the top of the fifth inning when the first runner was caught stealing home for the first out and Clayton Allison striking out the next batter for the second out. The next two batters walked which loaded the bases for second baseman David Hoffmire who singled to right field bringing in the first run for Santa Clara 1-0. Two more runs scored when Matt Long singled to center field. The inning ended on line out to Erik Wetzel.
The Bulldogs did get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when starting Santa Clara left handed pitcher Matt Wickswat (3-2, 5.20) balked scoring Todd Sandell from third base 3-1.
The Broncos scored one more run at 4-1 on a sacrifice fly to center field.
With one out and two men on base at first and second the Bulldogs were threatening to score in the bottom of the ninth but fell short after a quick fly out and a ground out ending the game.
The Bulldogs combined for seven hits on 35 at bats.
Fresno State (8-12) will play tomorrow in the final contest of the three-game series against Santa Clara (12-11) at 1:05 p.m.
