FRESNO, Calif. - In the bottom of the ninth with one swing of the bat, senior Isacc Vivas hit the game-winning home run for the Fresno State baseball team. The Bulldogs beat Santa Clara, 10-9 Tuesday night and improve to 6-6 on the season.
Vivas' walk-off home run is the second game-winning home run for the Bulldogs this season. The first came opening night from first baseman Jordan Ribera.
The `Dogs scored 10 runs on 10 hits and Vivas led the way hitting 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs scored in the first taking an early lead, 1-0. Junior Danny Muno lead off the inning with a double off the left field wall. Center fielder Dusty Robinson hit an RBI single to right field allowing Muno to score.
In the second inning, Ribera knocked a base hit to right field. Kenny Wise followed with a base hit to right field. Wise advanced to third base on an error and Ribera scored increasing the Dogs lead, 2-0.
Catcher Trent Garrison hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Wise extending the Bulldogs lead, 3-0.
Sophomore Derek Benny started the mid week game against Santa Clara. The right-hander struck out two batters in the first inning. Benny struck out four Bronco batters in five and two-third innings.
Santa Clara got on the board with a run in the fifth inning to cut the `Dogs lead, 3-1.
The Bulldog defense turned a 1-2-3 double play to end the fifth inning with bases loaded. Fresno state has fielded 19 double plays in 2010.
In the fifth inning, Vivas hit a bunt single to lead off the inning. Muno walked moving Vivas to second base. Freshman Justin Charles hit a sacrifice bunt as Vivas and Muno advanced to second and third base. Junior Bobby Coyle reached on an error that allowed Muno and Vivas to score extending the Bulldogs lead, 5-1.
Robinson walked moving Coyle to second base. Sophomore Brennan Gowens followed with another walk to load the bases. Ribera grounded out to the third baseman allowing Coyle to score as the `Dogs lead, 6-1.
Wise hit a three-run home run over the right field wall giving the `Dogs the biggest lead of the night, 9-1.
The Bulldogs turned their 20th double play of the season in the sixth inning.
The Broncos scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning cutting the Bulldogs lead, 9-4.
In the eighth inning, Santa Clara scored another five runs tying the game, 9-9.
Vivas hit a solo home run over the left field wall to win the game, 10-9.
