FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (7-8) could not recover from a slow start against San Francisco Saturday night and fell 6-3 at Pete Beiden Field. Seniors Patrick Hutcheson and Kenneth Wise both finished with three hits in the contest.
Wise went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the night. Hutcheson finished 3-for-5 with a double, respectively.
Senior Cody Kendall entered the game on the mound in the top of the fourth inning and struck out a career and game-high seven batters during 5.2 innings of work.
The seniors attempted to rally the Bulldogs throughout the contest but the Dons gave an all-around solid effort to earn their first win of the series.
Down 5-0 in the sixth inning, junior Trent Garrison singled to right. He was thrown out at second as sophomore Aaron Judge advanced to first on a fielder's choice. With two outs and a 1-0 count, Wise hit a two-run shot over the right center wall, ending San Francisco starter Abe Bobb's shutout.
Bobb struck out the next batter to end the inning and the Dons responded with a run in the seventh to extend the lead to four.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Judge singled through the left side on a 3-2 pitch to bring Wise up to the plate again. Bobb's night would end there after going 7.2 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.
Wise picked up his third hit of the night on a single to right field off closer Elliott Waterman. But the lefty got out of the inning by forcing the next batter to ground out to second.
Great defensive plays in the outfield helped keep the Dons off the base path and Kendall struck out the final San Francisco batter to give the Bulldogs a chance at rallying.
Down 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Taylor Tempel pinch hit to lead off. With a 2-1 count, he sent a towering shot high over the left field wall. It was the Clovis High School grads first collegiate home run. With two outs on the board, Hutcheson doubled through the right side for his third hit of the day, but Waterman struck out the final batter to end the game.
Freshman William Munro (1-2) received the loss and Bobb (3-1) earned the win.
