Dogs and Pilots Go to the Wire
March 11, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - On a day that saw Indiana and Gonzaga combine for 26 runs in their second-round tournament victories, one would expect the nightcap of the 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik would result in similar action on the scoreboard.
Instead, Fresno State and Portland combined for five runs in a game that took just 2 hours and 16 minutes to play. The Pilots held the Dogs to five hits in a 3-2 victory in front of 1,845 fans at Pete Beiden Field.
Portland jumped on the Dogs early on a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning by Bryant Kraus. Fresno State answered with a run each in the bottom half of the first and second innings. Eric Wetzel singled and stole second base, his fifth of the season, before crossing the plate on a sac fly by Steve Susdorf. Wetzel had two of Fresno State's five hits in the game.
Fresno State tied the game at 2-2 an inning later when right fielder Steve Detwiler hit a homerun to left. It marked the second straight game he's left the yard in the Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament.
The Pilots regained the lead in the sixth when Crowder doubled and would later score on a routine groundout.
The Dogs generated some excitement in the bottom of the ninth inning getting two runners in scoring position with just one out. However, the Dogs left them stranded to close the game.
Brandon Burke, despite the loss, pitched well in relief of Justin Miller. In seven-and-a-third innings, he allowed just three hits and one run. He struck-out two Pilot batters. Miller and Burke combined to allow just four hits the game.
The Dogs continue the Pepsi Johnny Quik Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. against Indiana University. The Hoosiers beat New Mexico State 16-4 in the matinee game today. Fresno State swept Indiana in a two-game weekend series prior to the start of the tournament.
In other games scheduled for Wednesday, Utah plays New Mexico State at 10 a.m. and Portland plays Gonzaga at 2 p.m.
