Utah 8, New Mexico State 5
Utah took an early lead and held off a late-inning surge to defeat New Mexico State, 8-5, in day three of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.
The Utes took an 8-0 lead, thanks in part to first baseman Austin Jones two-run homer in the second. Utah added three more in the sixth, fueled by catcher Jesse Shriner's ground-rule double, scoring a pair of runs.
New Mexico State bounced back in the eighth, rallying for five runs. Leftfielder Tyler Hardt powered the rally with a two-run homer. But, the Aggies could not overcome their deficit, going quietly in the ninth.
Utah starter Stephen Fife looked strong, scattering three hits in seven innings of scoreless pitching to earn the win. Tyler Sturdeveant suffered the loss for New Mexico State.
The victory improves Utah's tournament record to 2-1. The Utes play Indiana at 2 p.m. PT on Thursday.
New Mexico State falls to 1-2 in round-robin play. The Aggies look to bounce back Thursday morning versus Portland at 10 a.m. PT.
