FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State rallied from five runs down, scoring three times in each of the eighth and ninth innings to win the championship game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic Saturday at Beiden Field. With two outs in the top of the ninth, freshman outfielder DeAndre Miller tripled to right center off of Brigham Young reliever Bryce Burger, scoring two runners and giving the Bulldogs their first lead.
Fresno State senior left hander David Griffin (2-2) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the win. The Bulldogs improved to 11-14 on the year while the Cougars fell to 10-16. Burger was dealt the loss, dropping his record to 0-2.
BYU designated hitter Jeff Hiestand led the Cougars' attack, going 2-3, scoring a run and driving in two. Right fielder Ben Saylor was 1-4 with a solo home run to left in the second inning. The Cougars scored two more runs in the seventh on designated hitter Kevin Bills' RBI single to left and Brandon Taylor's sacrifice fly to center, increasing their lead to 9-5.
But the Bulldogs fought back, scoring on freshman outfielder Nick Moresi's RBI single before Miller's game-breaking triple. Griffin retired the Cougars in order in the home half of the ninth, sealing the victory.
Junior infielder David Gomez was 2-3, scoring twice and driving in two on his first home run of the season. Moresi was 3-5 with two runs and two RBI.
