Third Day of Pepsi Johnny Quik Comes to a Close
March 12, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - After dropping a tough one-run game to Portland on Tuesday night, the Fresno State Bulldogs found the tough going again on the third day of the 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic.
Indiana jumped on the Dogs for an early 2-0 lead on five hits on Wednesday night at Pete Beiden Field. Then Hoosiers then added six more in the seventh, and three in the eighth and to earn an 11-1 victory.
Steve Detwiler, who has two homeruns in the tournament, was one of four Bulldogs to get singles in the game. Erik Wetzel, Steve Susdorf and Jordan Ribera also had hits for the Dogs. Detwiler entered the game hitting .429 in the tournament.
Bulldogs starter Holden Sprague was solid in his second start of the year. In his previous five appearances he compiled an impressive 1.59 ERA. He finished seven complete innings giving up just two runs.
The game got a little heated in the top of the seventh inning when both benches cleared over a hit batter. The umpires emptied both dugouts and allowed the game to finish with the players in the line-ups.
The Dogs continue the Pepsi Johnny Quik Thursday night at 6:05 p.m. against Gonzaga. Gonzaga is 2-1 in the tournament but fell victim to West Coast Conference rival Portland, which lost its first tournament game, 12-7 in Wednesday's afternoon contest at Beiden Field.
Utah beat New Mexico State 8-5 in the morning game, improving the Utes' record of 2-1 in the Pepsi Johnny Quick. Indiana and New Mexico State are 1-2 in the tournament.
In other games scheduled for Thursday, New Mexico State plays Portland at 10 a.m. and Utah plays Indiana at 2 p.m.
The 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik concludes Saturday with three games.
