Baseball Picks Up 3-2 Rain-Shortened Victory Over Cal Poly
March 14, 2003 FRESNO, Calif. - Ryan Haag's two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Fresno State a 3-2 rain-shortened victory over Cal Poly in the 25th annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Friday at Beiden Field. The win was the Bulldogs' sixth in a row. Fresno State (11-12) moves into the championship game against Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs (13-9-1) drop to the third-place contest against Penn State at 4 p.m. Sprinkles began to fall on to the field in the top of the fourth inning, deteriorating into a steady rain by the bottom of the sixth. On Haag's triple in Fresno State's half of the seventh, Cal Poly right fielder Pat Breen came in to field the ball but slipped to the wet turf, causing the ball to go past him and all the way to the wall, scoring two runs. The game was delayed in the bottom half of the eighth inning with one out, then called 30 minutes later. The Bulldogs are now 5-0 in Classic play while the Mustangs head into Saturday's final games 3-1-1. Gil Infante picked up the win to improve his record to 3-0. Infante came into the game in the top of the seventh inning with one out and the bases loaded, but wiggled out of the jam by striking out Breen and Billy Saul. The loss went to Josh Kougl, who dropped to 0-3. Chad Edwards picked up his second save of the year. In a strong starting effort, Josh Glynn went 6 1/3 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing just two runs.
