FRESNO, Calif. - Friday saw the close of the regular schedule for the 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik, the six-team round robin tournament held at Pete Beiden Field on the Fresno State campus.

The first two games of the day ended in seven-run victories by Indiana and Gonzaga and a shutout by the Hoosiers. It concluded with Fresno State beating Mountain West Conference foe Utah by 10-0 margin.

Behind a terrific pitching performance from All-America candidate Tanner Scheppers and 11 hits by the Bulldogs, Fresno State cruised to a 10-0 victory in front of 1,845 fans. It was the second shutout by the Dogs this season.

The Dogs are 2-0 against MWC schools this season, beating No. 22 San Diego State, coached by Tony Gwynn, earlier this season in the SDSU tournament.

Scheppers entered the game owning a WAC-best 39 strikeouts in 19 innings of work. He added 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits over in seven complete innings. He lowered his ERA from 1.42 to 1.04 on the season while earning his third win in four starts. He gave way to Brandon Burke in the eighth inning.

For the second night in a row, Jordan Ribera's first at bat scored a Bulldog run. He launched his first homerun of the season in Thursday's win over Gonzaga and against the Utes, he drove in Alan Ahmady with a single in the second inning that scored the game's first run.

The Dogs added another in the bottom of the first inning when Danny Muno led off the inning with the single and after stealing second base, he scored when second baseman Erik Wetzel reached via an error.

Two innings later Wetzel bounced a double off the left field wall that drove in Muno and Todd Sandell. Wetzel has reached base safely in each game this season and has at least one hit in 15 of Fresno State's first 16 games.

Two batters later Ahmady singled to left to score Wetzel and give the Dogs a 5-0 lead, more than enough of a cushion for Scheppers.

In the top of the sixth inning he struck out the side on 12 pitches, giving him a game total of eight through up to that point in the game.

Wetzel added a second double to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Ahmady was 2-for-3 on the night and drew a walk.

Fresno State added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, one on a hits batsman (Ahmady) with the bases loaded followed by a wild pitch. After Mendonca reached on dropped third strike to lead the bases again, Detwiler drew a bases loaded walk that brought in another run.

Fresno State's two wins of the tournament came on the last two nights against the teams who will play for the title.

The Dogs will play Portland Saturday at 2 p.m. at Beiden Field. The game will be heard live on KMJ radio. The Bulldogs lost to the Pilots 3-2 on Tuesday night, the second day of the tournament.
