FRESNO, Calif. - After struggling early in the week, the Fresno State Bulldog finished strong winning their final three games in the 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik by a combined scored of 35-7. In those games, the Dogs outhit their opponents 41-12.

Fresno State defeated Portland 12-3 in the fifth-place game, avenging a 3-2 Portland victory on Tuesday night. The Dogs beat both teams (Utah and Gonzaga) that reached the tournament title game. Fresno State pounded out 18 hits and scored in double figures for the third straight game to end the week.

Playing as the visiting team, the Dogs jumped on the Pilots early with three runs in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Todd Sandell was hit by a pitch to get things started. Second baseman Erik Wetzel singled and WAC Preseason Player of the Year Steve Susdorf followed that with a single to score Sandell. First baseman Alan Ahmady then singled to left, driving in Wetzel. Susdorf later scored on an error giving the Dogs a 3-0 lead.

After holding a 3-1 lead after three innings, the Dogs added a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Jordan Ribera had a sacrifice fly that scored Tommy Mendonca in the fourth. One inning later, Susdorf reached on a single and later scored on an error by the Pilots' shortstop. That gave the Dogs a 5-2 after five complete innings.

Fresno State added four more runs over the next three innings, powered by a Steve Detwiler RBI double in the eighth. Detwiler had an outstanding tournament and entered Saturday's game with a .444 average in the tournament with three homeruns, a double and five RBIs. Jake Johnson added an RBI double in the inning as well to run the Fresno State lead to 11-3.



Starting pitcher Justin Wilson threw five innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out eight batters.

The Dogs wrapped up the week with a 5-3 record and took two of three games against Big 10 opponent Indiana.

Fresno State will take to the road for five games next week, playing at San Francisco on Tuesday, March 18, and then will open the WAC season with a four-game series at Hawaii March 20-22. The teams will play a double-header on Saturday.
