FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team lost 11-6 to San Diego State on Saturday night at Beiden Field in the second game of the weekend series.
San Diego State jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning as Bulldog starter Derek Velazquez got in trouble early. The right-hander surrendered three hits in the opening frame along with one error that enabled the Aztecs to take the early lead.
Fresno State pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth to bring them within four runs, 8-4, but that would be as close as Fresno State would come to taking back the lead.
Louie Payetta registered his first career home run in the top of the eighth to put the sixth run on the board. Payetta was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the contest.
Blake Quinn performed well in the late going to close out the final two innings, allowing just two hits with no earned runs.
Velazquez (1-2) took the loss while San Diego State’s Justin Hepner (1-1) earned the victory.
The Aztecs improved to 8-11 while the Bulldogs fell to 4-13 on the season.
Fresno State and San Diego State will conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Beiden Field.
