FRESNO, Calif. - Despite a fine performance from Matt Garza, the Bulldogs lost 3-2 to the Iona Gaels on St. Patrick's Day. Garza tied his career-high with 12 strikeouts, and gave up no earned runs, but the Gaels put together just what they had to to escaped with a 3-2 win.

The Bulldogs started out with the advantage early after a solo home run in the third from Christian Vitters, his fourth of the year, which put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Fresno State added another run in the fourth after Brian Lapin walked, advanced on a grounder from Ryan Overland, and scored on a Doug Fister RBI single to left.

Matt Garza was impressive in 7.0 innings pitched striking out 12, tying a career-high, and allowing no earned runs on three hits, but the Gaels put together three unearned runs in the fifth. Garza walked the leadoff batter Matt Bruno, but got the next two and looked to get out of the inning with a grounder to third base, but a Beau Mills error left runners at the corners with two outs. A wild pitch scored Bruno and then a two-run shot by Nick Capowski gave the Gaels a 3-2 lead.

Shawn Walsh then came in and finished the job for Iona, pitching four hitless innnings to receive the save. Starter Marty Hand got the win for the Gaels, his first of the year. The Bulldogs will face Iona in two games tomorrow, before finishing the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
