FRESNO, Calif. - Junior righthander Cody Smith scattered four runs on seven hits while striking out a season high tying five batters over six innings to lead Fresno State to a 7-4 win over Minnesota Friday at Beiden Field.

The Bulldogs won their season high eighth game in a row and improved to 13-12 on the season while the Golden Gophers lost their fourth straight to fall to 9-9.

Smith (4-2) won his third straight decision to notch his team season high fourth win of the year. Junior lefty David Griffin, sophomore righty Chad Edwards and junior righthander Bryan Wolfenbarger tossed three scoreless innings in relief to preserve the victory. Wolfenbarger pitched a scoreless ninth to record his third save of the year. The Brentwood, Calif., native has not allowed a run in his last six outings (eight innings).

Minnesota broke through in the first on an RBI double by Scott Welch that plated Sam Steidl who singled to lead off the game. Fresno State answered with two runs in the first on junior infielder Ryan Haag's lead off home run and an RBI double by freshman designated hitter Kent Sakamoto. Haag's round tripper was his first of the season.

Haag scored on a wild pitch by Minnesota starter Jay Gagner in the fourth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and give the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish. Gagner (2-2) allowed six runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings to pick up the loss.

David Roach went 2-for-4 including his first home run of the season to lead the Golden Gophers.

Junior infielder Casey McGehee tallied his tenth multi-hit game of the year going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
