    LOS ANGELES - The Fresno State baseball team battled tough against Loyola Marymount, but the Bulldogs lost both games of the doubleheader 7-6 and 7-3. The `Dogs are 0-3 in the series and are 10-8 overall. The Bulldogs wrap-up the four-game series against LMU tomorrow at 1 p.m.

    The Bulldogs had another impressive crowd of Bulldog fans with half of Page Stadium filled with Bulldog red. Among those wearing red were members of Fresno State's administration including, University President John Welty, Vice President Paul Oliaro, and Athletic Director Thomas Boeh, who were in town for the Fresno State's first round appearance in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

    Game One: Loyola Marymount 7, Fresno State 6

    Loyola Marymount got on the board scoring the first run of the game in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Derek Benny showed great composure as he struck out Shon Roe to retire the side with the bases loaded.

    Center fielder Brennan Gowens walked. Senior Gavin Hedstrom reached first base after getting hit by a pitch and Gowens advanced to second base. Catcher Trent Garrison hit a single to right field on the first pitch driving in Gowens and Hedstrom advanced to third base.

    Dusty Robinson loaded base after getting walked. Preseason All-WAC player Danny Muno reached first base on a fielder's choice and Hedstrom scored the go ahead run in the top of the second inning giving the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead.

    The Lions tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning.

     

     

    In the top of the third inning, third baseman Tom Mendonca hit a single to center field to get the offense started. Steve Detwiler walked, moving Mendonca to second base. Gowens singled up the middle driving in Mendonca regaining the lead. Detwiler advanced to third base. With runners on the corners, Garrison hit a sacrifice fly to left center field driving in Detwiler giving in the Bulldogs the 3-2 lead.

    Benny sat down the Lion batters 1-2-3 two consecutive innings. He sat down seven batters in a row from the bottom of the second inning through the fourth inning. The righty threw a career-high six innings allowing only three runs and striking out a career-high six batters. In his second start of the season, Benny improved to a 4.95 ERA in a total 20 innings of work.

    Hedstrom hit a solo home run to left center field to extend the Bulldogs lead to 5-2. It is the second home run of the weekend for the senior.

    The Bulldog's infield turned two double plays against the Lions. The `Dogs have 16 double plays on the season. In 2008, Fresno State led the nation in double plays turned with 76.

    The Lions narrowed the lead to 5-3 after scoring one run in the sixth inning. Loyola Marymount scored in the seventh inning and trail 5-4.

    Robinson hit a double off the right center field wall. Muno hit a double off "the Blue Monster", which is modeled after the scoreboard at Fenway Park and Robinson scored increasing the Bulldogs lead 6-4.

    The Lions rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning scoring three runs to win 7-6.

    Game Two: Loyola Marymount 7, Fresno State 3

    Loyola Marymount scored first in game two, scoring three runs taking the 3-0 lead in the first inning.

    Third baseman Tom Mendonca and catcher Jake Johnson prevented a Lion from scoring as they caught him in between third base and home. Mendonca ended up tagging the runner out to retire the inning.

    Mendonca hit a double off the "Blue Wall" to start the offense for the Bulldogs. Freshman Brennan Gowens doubled to left center field and Mendonca scored. Second baseman Gavin Hedstrom hit a single to the pitcher and Gowens advanced to third base.

    Dusty Robinson hit a double of the scoreboard and drove in Gowens. Hedstrom was tagged out at home plate and after two innings the `Dogs trailed 3-2.

    The Bulldogs defense was showcased when Muno made a diving stop at short stop and threw the runner out at first base.

    The Lions scored a run in the fourth inning giving LMU the 4-2 lead. Robinson hit a stand up triple to right center field to jump start the bats in the fifth inning. Muno walked. Right Fielder Trent Soares flew out in left center field and Robinson scored bringing the `Dogs within one run of LMU.

    Sophomore Jake Floethe made his fifth start of the year. The right-hander sat the batters down in order in the sixth inning. Floethe threw 6 1/3 innings striking out five batters. He is 3-1 on the season and has a 1.67 ERA in 32.1 innings.

    The Lions added three in the bottom of the seventh inning giving LMU the 7-3 win.
