OMAHA, Neb. - The Fresno State baseball team fell 2-1 Friday on a cold and windy night at TD Ameritrade Park. The wind was blowing steady at 20 mph out of center field, but was no match for the notoriously known ball park that rarely surrenders the long ball.
The Bulldogs scored the first run of the game in the top half of the fourth. Trent Woodward singled against one out in the inning, also the Bulldogs first hit of the game, and Taylor Ward hit the deepest ball of the day to left center that took the right hop to bounce over the fence to earn a ground rule double. With Woodward on third, Jake Stone registered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Woodward. It would be the only run the Bulldogs could generate on the evening.
Creighton's Mike Gerber led off the home half of the fourth with a triple that would lead to the Bluejays answering the run the Bulldogs scored in the top half, to square the game at one run a piece. Fresno State starting pitcher Derick Velazquez battled through the fourth and eventually retired the side with a strikeout with runners on second and third to end the threat.
The Bluejays tacked on the game-winning run in the fifth inning. Velazquez intentionally walked Gerber in his last at-bat before the 'Dogs went to the bullpen in favor of the left-handed arm of Casey Rodriguez. Looking to record the final out after inheriting two runners, Reagan Fowler singled up the middle to plate what turned out to be the winning run.
Woodward posted his second hit in the eighth, a single. Jake Alvarez pinch ran and stole second to put the 'Dogs in scoring position for the second time since the fourth. Fresno State posted two hits after scoring its only run in the fourth throughout the rest of the game.
Jimmy Lambert pitched well to close the game over the last three innings. He surrendered just one hit while striking out three to hold the Bluejays scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Fresno State resumes its series against Creighton Saturday at 12 p.m. PT. RHP Tim Borst (1-0, 3.81 ERA) is scheduled to face off against RHP Austin Groth (1-1, 3.45 ERA).
