OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton scored three runs aided by three errors in the second inning and the Bulldog baseball team could not recover Sunday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park. Fresno State fell 6-2 to give the Bluejays the two game weather shortened series sweep.
Fresno State had its chances to plate runs that fell victim to both great Creighton defense and some bad luck. In all, the Bulldogs left 12 on base in the game. Additionally, Fresno State could not get a leadoff batter on base until a walk was issued in the seventh, Jordan Luplow reached base with a leadoff single in the ninth.
In the second, Taylor Ward connected for the Bulldogs first hit of the day while Jake Stone, on a sacrifice bunt attempt, rolled the perfect bunt down the line that refused to cross the chalk to allow him to reach for a single. But with two on and one out, the 'Dogs could not convert.
In the home half of the second, an error led the inning, and set the stage for the rest of the frame. Three runs scored on two hits and three errors, and Creighton would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Bulldogs posted single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Luplow drove home Chris Mariscal from first with a stand-up double in the fifth and Brody Russell plated Manny Argomaniz from second in the sixth.
Luplow and Ward paired for half of the Bulldogs hits, each connecting for two. Luplow went 2-for-5 while Ward was 2-for-4.
Garrett Mundell excelled out of the bullpen for Fresno State. He entered in the fifth, asked to retire the final out and remained in for the sixth and seventh innings. The junior righty retired all seven in order without issuing a walk.
Starting pitcher Tim Borst was charged with the loss in 4 2/3 innings work. Borst allowed three runs, although none were earned in the catastrophic second when all three runs were scored on the three errors.
The game time temperature of 32 degrees was six degrees warmer than Saturday's scheduled start time. Although, with little to no wind and sunshine on Sunday, the weather held up for the two schools to squeeze in the second game of three games scheduled on a cold weekend in Omaha.
Fresno State returns to Beiden Field Tuesday for a midweek pairing against UC Santa Barbara at 6:35 p.m. before heading back on the road for a conference series at San Diego State next weekend.
