FRESNO, Calif. - No. 15 UC Santa Barbara used single runs in the ninth and tenth innings to come from behind and defeat Fresno State 5-4 Tuesday night at Beiden Field. The Gauchos tied it in the ninth and plated the go-ahead run in the extra frame to improve to 18-3 on the year while the 'Dogs dropped to 15-10.
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Chris Mariscal lifted a 0-2 offering to deep left field that just kept carrying, as Joey Epperson leapt for the ball at the warning track, the ball skimmed off his glove and over the fence. The two-run homer plated Ryan Dobson to put Fresno State on top 4-3.
In all, the eighth started with four consecutive base hits, three singles along with the homer. Dillon Tate entered to pitch UCSB out of the frame, he pitched himself out of the inning with runners on the corners, striking out two and forcing a ground out.
The Bulldogs lead was gone as quick as they owned it as UCSB answered back in the next frame. Robby Nesovic led off the ninth with a double down the left field line, a bunt single by Jackson Morrow on an 0-2 count followed by a wild pitch tied the game at four a piece to send the game to extras.
Connor Chase, the eighth pitcher of the game for the Bulldogs, entered in the 10th and surrendered the leadoff single up the middle that led to the go-ahead run. Cameron Newell hit the RBI single to left center field to plate Epperson.
After entering in the top of the eighth, Tate would be the last pitcher the Bulldogs would face all night, he went three innings and surrendered just two hits to earn the win.
The Gauchos struck first, scoring the games first two runs in the top half of the second. But Fresno State responded in the home half with two runs of its own. Manny Argomaniz provided a two-RBI single to plate Brody Russell and Kevin Viers against two outs. Viers doubled and Russell walked to get on base, both advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch to place them both in scoring position to score on Argomaniz' single.
A leadoff double by the Gauchos in the fourth, surrendered by Dillon Houser, allowed UCSB to jump back in front, 3-2. The run was scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Morrow that brought home Newell from third.
Tuesday's midweek game was the fourth extra inning game of the season through 25 games, matching the season total of four in the entire 2013 season (56 games). Fresno State is 2-2 in games that go extra frames.
Up next for Fresno State is a three-game conference road series versus San Diego State. First pitch from Tony Gwynn Stadium is 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday while the Sunday finale is slated for 1 p.m.
