Fresno, Calif. - The Bulldogs put together a second straight 6-3 win over Hawai'i to add another game to a five game winning streak. Fresno scored six runs on eight hits, with all six runs coming off of previously undefeated starter Steven Bryant, who was 4-0 coming into tonight's matchup. Beau Mills hit his team-leading ninth homerun in the first inning, a two-run shot to give the Bulldogs their first lead.
The entire lineup helped the 'Dogs put together their fifth straight win, but again, it was the top that started it off. DeAndre Miller started off the game with a single, and after Hawai'i starting pitcher retired the next two Fresno State batters easily, Beau Mills turned on Bryant's first offering and sent it deep, his ninth of the year.
Michael Cooper, Fresno State's starter, battled through some trouble in the early innings, as runners reached third in both the second and third innings, but got himself out of trouble in both innings by striking out Schafer Magana in the second and getting Matthew Inouye to ground into a double play in the third inning.
Cooper and the Bulldogs would finally be burned in the fourth, as Isaac Omura hit a homer to right, and the Rainbows pushed across another run after a Greg Kish double, tying the score at two apiece. Cooper would go another inning after turning over the reins to Eddie Romero, and finished the game having allowed five hits in 5.0 innings while striking out five and giving up just one earned run.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the sixth against starter Steven Bryant. Starting the inning a little wild, Bryant walked both Christian Vitters and Beau Mills. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance, and David Gomez laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt against the Hawai'i infield, which was still back at double-play depth, scoring both Vitters and Mills. The Bulldogs would add two more after singles from Chase Moore and Ryan Overland, giving Fresno State a 6-2 lead.
The Rainbows staged a two-out rally in the ninth, scoring one run and putting two runners on, but a light grounder to third base was easily handled by Beau Mills, giving Fresno State their second WAC win in as many games. The Bulldogs finish the series against Hawai'i tommorow, March 26, at 1 p.m.
