    FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team beat the Nevada Wolf Pack 12-4 on Friday in the Bulldogs WAC home opener. The win ups the Dogs record to 13-12 overall and 3-2 in WAC play while Nevada dropped to 12-10 and 4-1 in conference.

    Fresno State pounded out 12 hits, with seven hits coming from Erik Wetzel, Steve Susdorf and Alan Ahmady in the three, four and five spots. Ahmady went three-for-five with a three-run homerun while Wetzel and Susdorf went two-for-four.

    Brandon Burke earned the win as he pitched three and two thirds innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five.

    Nevada had seven hits for the game and committed four errors in the field.

    The Bulldogs struck first with two runs in the first and two in the third inning to lead 4-0. In the first inning, Trent Soares walked with one out and Wetzel followed with a double to right-center. Susdorf then hit a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Soares and Wetzel.

    Wetzel started the scoring attack with a one-out single up the middle in the third. He then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Nevada pitcher Rod Scurry.

    Wetzel would score on a wild pitch with Susdorf at the plate to up the Bulldog lead to 3-0. A batter later with two outs, Ahmady reached base on a fielding error. He later scored off a single to centerfield by Tommy Mendonca.

    The Wolf Pack rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Fresno State lead to 4-3. The Dogs answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Susdorf scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Overland to up the lead to 5-3.

    Fresno State added a run in the sixth and seventh to lead 7-3 after seven. In the top of the eighth the Wolf Pack loaded the bases with one out but was unable to get a run on the board after Burke struck out Kevin Rodland and Tyson Jaquez to get out of the jam.

     

     

    A three-run homerun by Ahmady in the eighth inning highlighted a five- run inning to give the Dogs a 12-3 lead.

    The series resumes on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2:05 p.m. The games can be heard live on KMJ 580.
