FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and fought off a ninth inning rally to get past No. 9 Long Beach State 7-6 on Tuesday evening at Pete Beiden Field.
The win ups the Bulldogs record to 16-13 and they have now won eight of their last nine games. Long Beach State dropped to 17-9. Long Beach State is the highest ranked opponent the Bulldogs have beaten this year.
"It's a good win," Fresno State coach Mike Batesole said. "That is a heck of a ball club over there in that other dugout. I've been competing against those guys for a long time and they play neat and clean baseball. They come to play every day. I have a lot of respect for this program."
In the seventh inning with one out Erik Wetzel reached base on an infield single and then stole second and then scored on a Steve Susdorf single to right field. Susdorf then scored on a double by Ahmady to right-center to up the Fresno State lead to 6-4. Ahmady later scored the final run of the inning off a triple to right-center by Tommy Mendonca.
Long Beach State had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning after Steve Tinoco hit a two-run homerun with one out. Brandon Burke then retired the final two batters to give the Bulldogs the win.
"It seems like every time we play these guys that tying run gets to the plate no matter what happens before the ninth inning," Batesole said. "You could smell it and knew it was going to happen. It was just a matter if we were going to finish it or not."
Jake Floethe earned his first win of the season as he pitched three innings of hitless baseball while striking out three.
The Dogs pounded out 13 hits led by Mendonca's 3-for-4 game with a triple and a homerun. Danny Muno, Trent Soares, Susdorf and Ahmady all had two hits.
The Bulldogs struck first in the first inning when they scored two runs. Muno started the inning off with a ground-rule double to left field. Soares then singled to left field, scoring Muno. Soares later scored on a double to left-field by Ahmady.
Long Beach State cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1 in the top of the second after a Jason Corder homerun to left field. The Dogs then upped the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Mendonca homerun.
The Dirtbags tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth but the Bulldogs were able to retake the lead at 4-3 in the fifth. Muno led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a Soares single that pushed Muno to third, he later scored on a Erik Wetzel ground out.
Long Beach State came back in the sixth to tie the game at four.
The Bulldogs return to the Diamond on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. when they play at No. 7 Cal.
