FRESNO, Calif - The cold and gloomy weather Tuesday night reflected the sentiment for Fresno State after surrendering four runs in the ninth inning to allow Pacific to leave town with a 7-3 win at Beiden Field. The loss drops Fresno State to 16-13 overall while Pacific improved to 13-17.
With the game knotted at three runs a piece, the Bulldogs' closer Jake Shull (2-3) took the mound for the ninth inning. Shull surrendered four runs (three earned) off of four hits while the defense posted two errors in a disastrous final inning.
Fresno State had opportunities in the middle innings to add to its run total, but could not plate runners in scoring position. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs and could not score. In the seventh, Chris Mariscal led off with a double and could not make it further than third base. In all, the Bulldogs stranded runners on third base in four different innings.
Jordan Luplow took advantage of two wild pitches in the opening frame after being walked to score the game's first run. Pacific responded in the third with two, but the Bulldogs countered with two of their own to regain the lead, 3-2. In doing so, Luplow registered his team leading fifth home run of the season as he sent the ball down the left field line, hitting the foul pole post, for the two-run homer to bring home Trent Woodward.
The Tigers tied the game at three runs each in the fifth with the aid of two Bulldog errors in the inning. The lead-off batter reached on an errant throw to first and would go on to score the game-tying run.
In total, the Bulldogs matched two season-high figures that assisted Pacific to the midweek win - five errors and 14 left on base.
Fresno State returns to action Friday at Beiden Field as they resume conference play with UNLV. First pitch is 6:35 p.m. both Friday and Saturday while the finale is at 1:05 p.m.
