Fresno State Takes Game Three Against Nevada, 10-4

RENO, Nev. - In beautiful, picturesque Reno, Nev. the Fresno State (20-18, 6-3) Bulldogs took care of business as they defeated the Nevada (20-17, 4-5) Wolf Pack by a 10-4 score Saturday afternoon at William Peccole Park. Tanner Scheppers (2-3, 5.94) stepped on the mound for the Bulldogs throwing five innings allowing three runs on six hits while also striking out six batters. His six strikeouts is a season and career-high on the year.
Fresno State scored its first run of the game in the first inning when Brian Lapin grounded out to the shortstop advancing Loren Storey from third base. Storey got on base from a fielders choice, moved to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch. Storey now has stolen 15 bases on the year and only been caught twice.
Nevada tied the game up in the bottom of the first inning when Baker Krukow singled to center field scoring Jason Sadoian from second base. Scheppers struck out the last batter to end the inning and recorded three strikeouts in that inning.
In the bottom of the third inning the Wolf Pack took a two run lead at 3-1 on a single to right center from Terry Walsh scoring Jason Rodriguez from third and a sacrifice fly from Matt Suleski.
Shortstop Todd Sandell brought the Bulldogs within one 3-2 after a home run to left field in the top of the fifth inning. Earlier in that inning a scored double play was called after runner interference.
Nevada added another run at 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rodriguez grounded out scoring Chris Siewart from third base. Fresno State got out of the inning on a ground out.
Fresno State was not done on the day as it took the lead and a little bit of batting practice in the top of the seventh inning scoring six runs at 8-4. The Bulldogs were brought within one at 4-3 when Mendonca hit his seventh home run of the season to left field. He also had a total of three home runs in the series against Nevada. With no outs and base runners on second and third Todd Sandell hit a double down the left field line scoring two runs. Storey doubled and Lapin singled bringing in the last three runs.
In the top of the eighth Fresno State added its last two runs at 10-4 on a double from Storey and Lapin.
The Bulldogs finished with 15 hits and a total of six doubles on the day. Erik Wetzel went 3-for-4 with one double, two singles and two runs. Dan Grubb went 2-for-5 with one double, one single and three RBI's. Todd Sandell went 3-for-5 with one double and two singles.
The Bulldogs will continue road play Tuesday when they face UC Davis set for a 2:30 p.m. start. Later in the week Fresno State will face conference opponent Hawai'i in a three-game series at Beiden Field.
