HONOLULU - The Fresno State baseball team came from two runs down and scored four runs in the eighth inning to earn a 5-3 victory over Hawai'i Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.
After seeing Hawai'i rally for a big inning in the series opener, Fresno State (15-15, 1-1 WAC) came out Friday night with a big 8th inning of their own, picking up its first WAC win.
"We played outstanding defense tonight," Head Coach Mike Batesole said. "We hung around and came through when we had the opportunity."
The Bulldogs received another strong pitching performance Friday, with junior Justin Haley going seven innings, allowing three runs, striking out five batters and picking up his fourth win of the year. Senior Taylor Garrison came in and worked two scoreless innings to pick up his seventh save of the season.
"Justin had his fastball going tonight," Batesole said. "He stayed with it and was aggressive early."
Justin Charles led the 8th inning off with a single, followed by a single by Pat Hutcheson and Daniel Moultrie reached on an error. Aaron Judge came up with an RBI single to tie the game 3-3. An RBI single by Jordan Luplow and a fielder's choice by Trent Garrison gave the Bulldogs a 5-3 edge.
The Bulldogs found themselves in another pitching battle early Friday night, scoring one run in the second inning to tie the game 1-1. Austin Wynns doubled to left centerfield, moved over to third on a single by Jordan Luplow and scored on a fielder's choice by Chris Mariscal.
After scoring one run in the first inning, the Rainbows broke the tie in the fifth inning, scoring a single run on a single by Trevor Podratz, scoring Stephen Ventimilia to take a 2-1 lead. Hawai'i added to the lead with one run in the seventh on a Pi'ikea Kitamura RBI double to give the `Bows a 3-1 advantage.
Judge, Hutcheson and Luplow all had two hits for the Bulldogs and Judge, Luplow, Mariscal and Garrison had one RBI each on the night.
The final game of the three-game series concludes Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. PT start at Les Murakami Stadium.
