Baseball Drops Heartbreaker In Extra Innings
April 7, 2012
HONOLULU - The Fresno State baseball team dropped a tough WAC road game Saturday afternoon, giving up two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to the University of Hawai'i, leading to a 3-2 loss at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.
Fresno State (15-16, 1-2 WAC) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI double by Austin Wynns. The Bulldogs went to closer Taylor Garrison, who picked up the loss allowing two runs with two outs in the 10th.
"It's tough to get a win on the road in conference play," Head Coach Mike Batesole said. "We did a lot of good stuff today and we made some nice plays."
For the third straight game, the Bulldogs received a strong pitching performance, this time by Tom Harlan. Harlan worked 6 1/3 innings allowing four hits, striking out four batters and not allowing an earned run.
"Tom made some great pitches out there," Batesole said. "We just didn't get the big hit when we had runners in scoring position."
Fresno State broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning after Chris Mariscal walked and Jordan Brink singled to left field. Trent Garrison then came in as a pinch hitter and doubled down the right field line to score Mariscal, giving the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Hawai'i (19-13, 2-1 WAC) came back with one run in the seventh inning off of Harlan. Cody Kendall then relieved Harlan and got out of a jam inducing a double play to end the inning.
The two teams split the first two games of the three-game series and played into extra innings before deciding the pivotal third game.
Offensively, Aaron Judge continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a walk, and Taylor Tempel and Jordan Brink each had two hits.
The Bulldogs continue their stretch of road games with a midweek game against UC Davis on Tuesday beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Davis, Calif. Fresno State returns home to host its first WAC series against San Jose State starting Friday night, April 13 at 6:05 p.m.
