Albuquerque, N.M. - New Mexico exploded for a seven-run fourth inning against Fresno State, using it to cruise to an 11-6 win Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field.
In what was a long fourth inning for Bulldogs' starter Derick Velazquez, the Lobos followed a leadoff groundout by reaching safely on the next eight at bats against him. In that span, the Lobos scored seven runs and took a grip on Saturday's game. After facing all nine batters, Fred Schlichtholz entered in relief. He walked the first batter before retiring the side by inducing a 6-4-3 double play against the 11th batter of the fourth. The frame included six singles, two walks, and a bases clearing triple.
The Lobos outburst came at the heels of what started out as a positive fourth for Fresno State. After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Bulldogs stormed back and took a 5-4 lead in the top half of the fourth. On consecutive at bats, Brody Russell and Jordan Luplow each sent the baseball in flight over the left field fence. Russell's tied the game and Luplow's gave the Bulldogs the go-ahead run.
In the third inning, the Bulldogs plated three to bring them within one after being held scoreless through the first two, despite loading the bases each inning.
Facing two outs in the first, New Mexico rallied for three straight doubles in the opening frame to take an early 4-0 lead.
Fresno State added one run in the sixth while the Bulldogs' bullpen held the Lobos at bay for the remainder of the game after the seven-run fourth. Schlichtholz, William Munro and Dillon Houser combined for 4.2 innings of work, scattering five hits over that time with no runs allowed.
The Bulldogs allowed season highs in both runs (11) and hits (16) allowed, which was overshadowed by the most hits (12) Fresno State's offense has produced since March 12 in a win over California.
Lobos' Colton Thompson (4-4) earned the win despite surrendering five runs and eight hits to the Bulldogs over five innings of work. Velazquez (2-4) took the loss for Fresno State.
The series finale between Fresno State (18-17, 7-10 MW) and New Mexico (26-11-1, 10-4 MW) is Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. Reigning Mountain West co-Pitcher of the Week, Tim Borst (2-1, 2.83 ERA) will start for the Bulldogs. The Lobos will use 2014 preseason All-American Josh Walker (4-2, 3.55 ERA).
