Fresno, Calif. - The Bulldogs struggled to get any offense going against Louisiana Tech's Ryan Rupert, and Fresno State lost the first game of a three game series to Louisiana Tech 2-1 on Friday night. Freshman Beau Mills hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning to tie the game, but a matching homer from Louisiana Tech's Bobby Holik gave Rupert the cushion that was needed. Rupert finished with a complete game, giving up four hits and one run.
Pitching was the story of the day, as Matt Garza again pitched well but was outdueled. Garza pitched 5.2 innings, scattering nine hits and striking out four, but gave up two runs to get the loss, his fourth.
Both pitchers only had trouble with one batter. Fresno State's Beau Mills had a solo home run in the fourth, but Gary Holik was the hero for Louisiana Tech, homering to left both times he faced Garza, scoring the only two runs for the Bulldogs. Rupert cruised the rest of the game for the victory, despite hitting four batters, plunking Mills and DeAndre Miller twice apiece.
The two teams will face off again in Ruston tomorrow in the second game of the three game conference matchup.
