FRESNO, Calif. --- One costly error proved to be the difference in the Fresno State baseball team's 8-5 loss to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners on Wednesday night at Beiden Field.
Fresno State (8-24) had built a 3-0 lead by scoring three runs in the fourth, but let Bakersfield tie the game right up with three of their own in the fifth.
Two innings later, the 'Runners scored four times - all unearned with two outs - following left-handed reliever Aaron Gillis' throwing error when he sailed the ball into center field when trying to retire the lead runner at second base for the first out of the seventh inning on a CSUB sacrifice attempt.
"We played another really good six innings - turned a couple double plays and did a lot of good things," Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole said. "And then we got deep into the game in the seventh inning and we made an error on the mound on a bunt that was huge, that's an easy out at second base. Then, we proceeded to walk a guy, hit a guy and throw a wild pitch. When it comes in bunches like that, like it has been starting in the seventh inning things start to bunch up on us."
Bakersfield (25-13) added one more in the eighth before Fresno State's Jordan Luplow crushed his second home run year - a two-run two-out blast about five feet inside the left field foul pole in the bottom of the ninth.
Next up for the Bulldogs will be a rare five-game home weekend series versus the Air Force Falcons, due to two postponed games between the schools earlier this season when Fresno State visited Colorado Springs.
The FS-AFA series will be played as doubleheaders on Friday (Game 1 - 3:05 p.m. PT) and Saturday (Game 1 - 2:05 p.m. PT), and the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The second game of the doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday will begin approximately 45-55 minutes following the conclusion of the first game of the day. In the early games on Friday and Saturday, Air Force will be the designated home team and the regulation length will be listed as seven innings.
For all five games between the Bulldogs and Falcons, members of the United States military will receive free admission.
The games will also be part of the campus' Vintage Days celebration that annually brings over 50,000 people to campus for a weekend of fun for the entire family. For more information on Fresno State's Vintage Days, please visit www.fresnostate.edu/vintagedays.
