Baseball Rallies to 13-10 Victory

LAS CRUCES, NM - After trailing by as many as four runs during the first four innings, the Fresno State baseball team rallied to a 13-10 win on Friday night to improve its record to 21-16 overall and a WAC best 10-3 mark in conference. New Mexico State dropped to 18-20 and 5-8 in conference.
The Bulldog offense pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of three Aggie errors en route to the win.
Steve Susdorf led the Bulldog offensive fireworks by going 4-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs. Tommy Mendonca went 3-for-5 with one RBI while Steve Detwiler went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Danny Muno and Gavin Hedstrom also had two hits for the Dogs.
Tanner Scheppers improved his record to 6-2 on the season as he pitched five innings, scattering seven hits and striking out eight. Jake Hower pitched the next three innings and allowed only two hits while striking out three.
The Bulldogs trailed 7-5 going into the fifth inning when they put up four runs to take the lead for good at 9-7 lead thanks to a three-run homerun by Detwiler. The inning started with Erik Wetzel getting hit by a pitch and Susdorf plating Wetzel on a double to right-center. Alan Ahmady then walked and a batter later with one out Dewiler hit his homer to give Fresno State the lead.
The lead was extended to 11-7 when Hedstrom and Wetzel hit back-to-back homeruns to open the top of the sixth inning. Fresno State fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and 6-3 after three innings.
The Dogs scored two runs in the top of the fourth before allowing a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 7-5. Ahmady singled to open the inning and Ryan Overland walked. Then with one out, Mendonca singled, scoring Ahmady, and Overland later scored on a ground out by Danny Grubb.
The four-game series resumes on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. The second game of the doubleheader can be heard live on 580 KMJ at 7 p.m.
