    LAS CRUCES, NM- - The Fresno State baseball team swept a doubleheader from New Mexico State on Saturday, winning game 1 9-5 and game 2 13-1 in seven innings. The two victories up the Bulldogs record to 23-16 and 12-3 in WAC play while New Mexico State dropped to 18-22 and 5-10 in conference.

    Fresno State rode the hot bat of Tommy Mendonca in the two games and the pitching of Justin Wilson and Holden Sprague.

    Mendonca was 6 for 9 with two homeruns and six RBIs in the two games while Gavin Hedstrom was 5 for 8 with one homerun and two RBIs. Erik Wetzel had four hits in the two games while Steve Susdorf and Danny Muno each had three hits.

    Sprague picked up his first win of the season as he struck out six and allowed only three hits in a complete game. Wilson pitched eight innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

    The Bulldogs had 25 hits in the two games.

    Game 1

    Thanks to the strong bats of the Fresno State baseball team and the arm of Wilson, the Bulldogs defeated New Mexico State 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Fresno State improves to 22-16 and 11-3 in WAC while New Mexico State dropped to 18-21 and 5-9 in conference.

    The Bulldogs scored their nine runs on 16 hits while Wilson improved his record to 4-4 as he tossed eight innings, allowing only four hits and striking out five.

    Mendonca led the Bulldog offense by going 4 for 5 with one RBI and scored two runs. Susdorf went 3 for 4 while Muno, Wetzel and Hedstrom each had two hits. Hedstrom and Mendonca both hit homeruns for the Dogs.

     

     

    The Bulldogs struck early and often as they scored in every inning but two. Muno and Hedstrom opened the first inning with back-to-back singles. Later in the inning Muno scored on a wild pitch by New Mexico State's Heath Goin.

    The lead was extended to 3-0 after two. The scoring started with Detwiler reaching base after getting hit by a Goin pitch. Mendonca then singled to right field and a batter later moved to second on a throwing error by Goin. The miscue allowed Detwiler to score on the play. Mendonca later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hedstrom.

    After Fresno State got a run in the fourth, Mendonca homered in the fifth and Hedstrom in the sixth to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead. The lead was extended to 7-1 in the seventh when Detwiler opened the inning by walking and later scoring on a ground out by Danny Grubb.

    Fresno State added two more runs in the eighth before the Aggies scored four in the bottom of the ninth.

    Game 2

    The Dogs jumped out to an 8-1 lead after the fourth inning on only four hits. Aggie pitcher Tyler Sturdevant walked seven and hit three Bulldog batters that led to a handful of Fresno State runs.

    Fresno State scored three runs in the first inning on only one hit, that being a bunt by Wetzel. In the fourth inning, the Dogs scored five on only two hits, one being an infield single by Hedstrom and the other a double by Mendonca.

    Mendonca went 2 for 4 with a double, homerun and five RBIs in the game while Hedstrom was 3 for 4, scoring three runs. Wetzel also went 2 for 2 on the night.

    Sprague had a solid game on the mound as he pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing only three hits. .
