SAN DIEGO --- Behind another stellar start from freshman Blake Quinn and a powerful night at the plate by Jordan Brink, the Fresno State baseball team defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 7-5 on Friday night at Charlie Smith Field inside Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The win, which is the Bulldogs' six straight in Mountain West play, moves Fresno State just a game back of the third-place Aztecs and two games out of a tie with UNLV for second place in the conference standings.
Fresno State built a 7-1 lead and never trailed while fending off a late comeback bid by San Diego State, who dropped their fourth straight MW contest.
"I like what our offense did once we got the lead," Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole said. "We stayed with it, we answered back and then the big five-run inning. We have been in this kind of situation too many times to just score one or two runs there."
Quinn delivered 6.2 masterful innings from the hill in giving up just one run while allowing four hits and striking out two batters. He retired six of the first seven batters of the game and later sat down nine consecutive Aztecs.
Meanwhile, Brink went 2-for-3 as Fresno State's designated hitter - hitting a solo home run in the fourth and a two-RBI triple to key the Bulldogs' five-run eighth. The sophomore from Fresno has been connecting at a torrid rate in going 10-for-16 in his last six MW games with four triples, two doubles, a homer and 10 RBI for a 1.438 slugging percentage during the hot stretch.
Bulldogs' freshman right-hander Tim Borst pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season.
"That was a real save - that was the first real save that we have had in a long time," Batesole said.
