Baseball Remains in First in WAC, Despite DH Loss

    FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State baseball team dropped two games to New Mexico State on Saturday, losing Game 1, 9-2 and Game 2, 12-7. Fresno State still sits in first place in the WAC with a 15-8 mark and a 27-23 overall record. New Mexico State is 24-26 and 11-12 in conference.

    Fresno State had 17 hits on the day with Steve Detwiler coming up with four and Ryan Overland three. Steve Susdorf, Erik Wetzel and Tommy Mendonca all had homeruns on the day. Clayton Allison and Justin Miller took the losses.

    Game 1

    The Bulldogs fell behind 4-1 after three innings and lost game 1 of the doubleheader 9-2. New Mexico State put the game away by scoring two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Fresno State had seven hits for the game with Gavin Hedstrom and Detwiler leading the way with two.

    Allison suffered the loss but he did strike out a season high seven batters.

    Game 2

    The Bulldogs fell behind 5-1 after the top of the second inning but in the bottom half of the second Fresno State tied the game at five thanks a three-run home run by Wetzel and a sacrifice fly by Danny Muno.

    Overland led off the second with a single and then with one out Detwiler reached on an infield single. After a fielder's choice by Trent Soares, Muno hit a sacrifice fly that brought Overland home. Wetzel then followed with his three-run homerun over the left field fence to tie the game.

     

     

    New Mexico State scored three runs in the fourth and the Bulldogs countered with a run in the fifth thanks to a solo-homerun by Susdorf.

    The 8-6 Aggie lead ballooned to 11-6 as NMSU scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Aggies added a run in the top of the ninth to make the score 12-6. The Dogs rallied in the bottom of the ninth as they scored one run and had the tying run on deck but New Mexico State pitcher Erik Nyquist forced Detwiler into a ground out to end the game.
