Bulldogs Fall to La Tech, 8-6

RUSTON, La. - The Fresno State baseball rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but came up two runs short and lost to Louisiana Tech, 8-6. The Dogs are 31-10 on the season and 11-6 in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Bulldogs out hit Louisiana Tech 12-8 in the first game of the doubleheader. Dusty Robinson hit a team-high three hits after going 3-for-4 at the plate. Senior Jordan Ribera went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs and freshman Aaron Judge also had a multi-hit game after hitting 2-for-3.
Junior Josh Poytress struck out the side in the first inning to begin his sixth start of the 2011 season. The lefty struck out six batters bringing his season total to 47 strikeouts.
In the second inning, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead after designated hitter Kenny Wise hit a solo homer to right field. The junior has three home runs on the season and 15 in his career.
Second baseman Pat Hutcheson recorded his first career home run in the top of the third inning. The solo shot to right field increased the Dogs lead 2-0 over Louisiana Tech.
Senior Danny Muno continued the third inning with a single to right field and advanced to third base on a double from junior Dusty Robinson. Ribera hit a run-scoring single to right field extending the Bulldogs lead 3-0.
Louisiana Tech took the lead in the bottom of the third inning after scoring five runs on five hits. Fresno State trailed 5-3 heading into the top of the fourth inning.
Judge led off the fourth inning with a walk after working a full count. Catcher Austin Wynns hit a stand up double to left field and Judge moved to third base on the play. Hutcheson reached base with the second Bulldog walk of the inning and loaded the bases for Muno. The third baseman hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing home Judge and the Dogs trail, 5-4.
La Tech scored an insurance run without a hit in the fourth inning and the Dogs trail 6-4.
Poytress threw five and two-thirds inning on Saturday afternoon. He gave up five runs and hurled three scoreless innings. Poytress is 5-1 on the mound and has an ERA of 2.88.
A two-run home run from Mark Threlkeld increased La Tech's lead 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ribera answered with a two-run home run to right field in the top of the seventh inning and the Dogs trailed 8-6. Ribera has five home runs on the season and seven RBIs in the series.
Louisiana Tech holds on to win its first game of the series, 8-6.
