BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The road continues to be unkind to the Fresno State baseball team, on Wednesday at Bakersfield the Bulldogs were defeated 6-3 to cap a five-game road trip that produced one win. Fresno State will return home to close out the regular season with a four-game homestand, a place the 'Dogs have won six in a row, starting May 13 with a rematch vs. CSUB.

Fresno State jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning, Trent Woodward and Chris Mariscal opened the game with back-to-back hits. Mariscal doubled to advance Woodward to third and Taylor Ward scored the run with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead.

Bakersfield answered in the home half, scoring two runs off of three consecutive singles to take the lead away, 2-1, before the first was complete.

Austin Guibor tied the game in fifth, 2-2, with the aid from an error at the plate by Roadrunners' catcher Ross Hough. Woodward singled facing two outs to initiate the play, the ball beat Guibor to the plate from center, but Fresno State scored the run as Hough dropped the ball.

As soon as Fresno State tied the game they fell behind in the home half of the fifth, a tough inning that began with two 'Runners reaching base on a pair of lead-off walks. A throwing error from the catcher, Ward, after Borst fanned his seventh batter of the game allowed a run to score from second. Ward attempted to pick off the runner at first following the strike out, but the ball sailed past Woodward and down the right field line. On the ensuing at-bat, a wild pitch would bring home another run.

The 'Dogs got one back in the sixth thanks to a single from Ward and Russell doubling off the wall to put runners on second and third. Viers grounded into a productive out to second base, scoring Ward to put to the 'Dogs within one, 4-3.

Bakersfield tacked on two more in the seventh, increasing its lead to 6-3 to put CSUB starter Hayden Carter in position to stay in the game.

Carter tossed his first career complete game to earn the win over the Bulldogs. The junior right-hander allowed eight hits to the Bulldog bats, struck out four and walked two.

Woodward and Mariscal each registered two hits while four others collected the other four base hits. Mariscal doubled on his first two at bats, Russell doubled in the sixth for the third mulit-base hit the 'Dogs were able to record Wednesday.

Borst (3-3) was charged with the loss in five innings of work, he surrendered four runs (three earned) and struck out seven and walked three. Garrett Mundell pitched two innings in relief, allowing two runs, while Derick Velazquez pitched the final frame.

Fresno State will be off this weekend and return to Beiden Field to host Bakersfield on May 13 at 6:35 p.m., a make-up game for the originally scheduled game on Feb. 26 that was postponed due to inclement weather. The season concludes with a three-game Mountain West conference series vs. San Diego State, May 15-17.
