    FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Gavin Hedstrom hit a double in the eighth inning bringing in two Bulldog runners to regain the lead for the Fresno State baseball team Friday night. The `Dogs came from behind beating Hawai'i 14-11 and are leading the series 2-0.

    "It feels amazing, you know we haven't had this in awhile," said senior pitcher Holden Sprague. "It is good to get another win. Especially against a team that is in the race with us. It was good for us to get the win, especially with how many runs we were down."

    The Bulldogs home run derby continued in the third inning when three out of four batters hit home runs. The three home runs bring the team total to 67 home runs this year and entering the weekend the team was 33rd in the nation in home runs.

    Fresno State improves to 8-10 in WAC play and has an overall mark of 24-25. The Bulldogs head into tomorrow's doubleheader with a four game win streak.

    Hawai'i scored three runs in the second inning taking the lead, 3-0.

    The Bulldogs ended the Rainbows second inning rally turning their 41st double play of the season.

    In the third inning, Hawai'i hit a solo home run to increase their lead, 4-0.

    The Bulldogs got on the board in the third inning with a three-run home run from freshman Dusty Robinson and the `Dogs trailed 7-3.

    Two batters later third baseman Tom Mendonca hit his golden home run or 50th of the year, well over the scoreboard in left field. Mendonca has 21 home runs on the season and is now tied for the most home runs this season in the WAC.

    Brennan Gowens hit a home run in the next at bat for back-to-back Bulldog home runs and the `Dogs trail, 7-5.

     

     

    Hawai'i added a run in the fourth inning leading, 8-5.

    Freshman Derek Benny started on the mound for the Bulldogs Friday night.

    Second baseman Danny Muno reached base on a fielding error. Robinson singled through the left side moving Muno to second base. Mendonca singled to second base allowing Muno to cross home plate and the `Dogs trail, 8-6. Robinson advanced to third base on the play.

    Gowens hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Robinson to score and the Bulldogs trail, 8-7.

    The Rainbows added a run in the sixth inning leading, 9-7.

    Catcher Trent Garrison doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth inning. Muno singled through the left side advancing Garrison to third base. Robinson singled to right center field advancing Muno to second base and bringing home Garrison as the Bulldogs trail, 9-8.

    First baseman Alan Ahmady walked to load the bases. Mendonca singled to right field bringing in two runners and the Bulldogs take the lead, 10-9.

    Pinch hitter Steve Detwiler flew out in right center field allowing Ahmady to score increasing the `Dogs lead, 11-9.

    Hawai'i hit a two-run home in the eighth inning to tie the game at 11 runs apiece.

    Robinson singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ahmady singled to left field moving Robinson to third base and Ahmady advanced to second base on the throw to third base.

    Mendonca was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hedstrom doubled to shallow center field advancing Mendonca to third base and bringing home two Bulldogs taking the lead, 13-11.

    "We trust our offense and our bats to get. Tomorrow is a big day for us," said Sprague. "We have to come out and get that first game, so the second one comes easier."

    Mendonca scored on a wild pitch increasing the Bulldogs lead, 14-11.

    Sprague came into close the ninth inning earning his second save of the season.

    The Bulldog infield turned three double plays against the `Bows tonight in the win.

    "We are the Fresno State Bulldogs. It's about that time of year when it all starts happening for us," said Sprague.

    The `Dogs conclude the series against Hawaii with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 2:05 p.m. The Bulldogs will honor the seniors prior to the game and make sure to check out the World's Largest Recycable Mascot in the red lot before the game.

The `Dogs and Rainbows play Thursday night at 6:05 pm, Friday at 6:05 pm and wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 2:05 pm.
