Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

LAS CRUCES, NM - The Fresno State baseball team swept the Saturday doubleheader from No. 25 New Mexico State. Dating back to the 2009 WAC Tournament the 'Dogs have won five-straight games against the Aggies.
The Bulldogs won 16-10 and 12-4, respectively. The three-game winning streak gives the `Dogs a 29-20 overall record and 10-5 in conference.
The Bulldogs are one and half games behind New Mexico State in the WAC standings. In the doubleheader, the Bulldogs scored a run or more in 11 consecutive innings. They recorded a total of 28 runs and 33 hits.
In the first game, a home run from Bobby Coyle gave the Bulldogs their first lead. Later on, the Bulldogs rallied with a homer from Dusty Robinson to regain the lead that eventually gave the `Dogs their first win of the day.
Robinson was 5-for-8 on the day with three home runs, a triple and seven RBIs. In the second game of the day, the sophomore went 3-for-3 with a pair of homers and five RBIs. He has hit four home runs in the series.
Sophomore Trent Garrison recorded four RBIs in the first game, which is a career-high in a single game. Coyle went 4-for-6 in the same game with three RBIs. He has hit three home runs on the weekend, two of which came in the first game on Saturday.
Game One: Fresno State 16, New Mexico State 10
Coyle hit an opposite field home run putting two runs on the scoreboard giving the Bulldogs the lead, 2-0.
The Aggies scored five runs in the second inning taking the lead, 5-2.
Starting pitcher Charlie Robertson retired the first and third innings in order. The sophomore held the Aggies scoreless for an inning and struck out two batters.
Garrison drove in a run with a single through the right side and the Bulldogs cut the Aggies lead to 5-3.
NMSU adds two runs in the fourth inning taking a 7-3 lead into the top of the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, Danny Muno hit a solo homer over the left field wall as the `Dogs trail, 7-4.
The Aggies increased their lead to 8-4 after scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, Garrison drove in three more runs with a three-run jack to center field and the Bulldogs trail, 8-7.
New Mexico State put two more runs on the board for the Aggies in the sixth inning. Jordan Ribera extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the seventh inning and Fresno State trails the Aggies, 10-8. With runners on the corners, Brennan Gowens reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Coyle to score bringing the Bulldogs within a run of NMSU.
Garrison continued the inning with a walk that loaded the bases for pinch hitter Kenny Wise. He hit a sacrifice fly that brought in a run tying the game 10-10.
Gene Escat kept the Aggies scoreless in the seventh inning with a pair of fly balls and a strikeout.
Dusty Robinson hit a two-run homer to center field giving the Dogs the lead for the first time since the first inning. An error by the Aggies allowed another run to cross home plate and the Bulldogs lead, 13-10.
Escat threw another scoreless inning and Fresno State took a three run lead into the ninth inning.
The Bulldogs drove in three more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Coyle started the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall and a double from Gowens brought in another run. Weber continued the two out rally with an RBI single through the left side and `Dogs lead 16-10.
Escat shut down the New Mexico State batters for the third inning in a row. The junior struck out three batters en route to his fourth victory of the year. The three scoreless innings improved Escat's ERA to 2.43.
The Bulldogs won the first game of the doubleheader 16-10.
Game Two: Fresno State 12, New Mexico State 4
Muno led off game two of the doubleheader with a single. Robinson hit a two-run home run to center field giving the `Dogs the lead, 2-0.
The Aggies answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning tying the game 2-2.
Robinson cleared the bases with a triple to left field and the `Dogs pull ahead 4-2.
Greg Gonzalez earned the start in the night cap struck out the side in the second inning. The junior struck out eight batters in his sixth win of the year. He threw four scoreless innings and limited the Aggies to four runs. NMSU averages 11.3 runs a game.
In the third inning, Ribera was hit by a pitch. Weber followed with a single and Garrison reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Detwiler. The senior launched the ball over the left field wall for a grand slam lifting the Bulldogs to an 8-2 lead.
Robinson hit his second home run of the game with a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth inning. He has four home runs so far in the series.
Ribera hit a single in the fourth inning extending his hit streak to 13 games, which ties for the longest hitting streak in 2010. He had a 13-game hitting streak earlier this season.
A walk and single put two runners on base for Ribera in the fifth inning. Ribera cleared the bases with his first career triple down the right field line increasing the Bulldogs lead, 12-2.
Taylor Garrison came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning. The sophomore threw two innings, allowed only one hit and struck out three batters.
The Aggies scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 12-4.
Fresno State won the second game of the night 12-4 for the doubleheader sweep over New Mexico State.
