May 11, 2003
FRESNO, Calif. - Junior righthander Cody Smith scattered two runs on seven hits and one walk in a complete game effort to lead Fresno State past San Jose State 3-2 Sunday at Beiden Field. The win clinched the series for Fresno State and evened the season series at 3-3.
The Bulldogs improved to 26-26 overall and 11-13 in the WAC while the Spartans dropped to 23-28 overall and 8-15 in conference play.
Smith (7-4) earned his team leading seventh win of the season while pitching his first career complete game and the Bulldogs' first of the year. The complete game is the first for Fresno State since May 25, 2002, when Bob Runyon accomplished the feat in a 6-2 win over Hawai'i at Beiden Field.
Fresno State senior outfielder Joey Myers broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. Myers (2-4) was one of four Bulldogs to tally multi-hit efforts for the game (Casey McGehee 3-4, Chris Patrick 2-3, Chase Moore 2-3). Freshman Kent Sakamoto added a run scoring double in the bottom of the fourth to stake the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead.
San Jose State cut the lead in half on a run scoring single by outfielder Nathan Corrick in the fifth. The Spartans tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Markum King. Infielder Kevin Frandsen went 3-4 with a double to lead the Spartans at the plate.
Fresno State freshman outfielder Chase Moore belted his team high tying eighth home run of the year with one out in the seventh to put the Bulldogs ahead for good.
Spartans starter Frank Esposito (1-4) allowed three runs on eleven hits over 6 2/3 innings to pick up the loss.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday when they open a three-game series at conference rival Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. PDT.
