FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team took a two-run advantage over Bakersfield in the first inning and found ways to extend the lead throughout the remainder of it to ease past the Roadrunners 8-4 on Tuesday night in the first game of four over a five day stretch at Beiden Field.
With the win, Fresno State increases its home winning streak to seven games and move to 26-25 on the season.
Following the two-run first, the Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in three separate innings - fourth, sixth and seventh - in a variety of ways as the game moved along.
Fresno State responded in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 4-1 after Allen Gwynn hit an RBI single in the top half to score the Runners first run. Kevin Viers led off the home half with a double, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a wild pitch by starter Hayden Carter with Manny Argomaniz standing in the batter's box. Argomaniz took the very next pitch from Carter over the left field fence for a solo home run. Carter would not return after four innings of work.
In the sixth, Brody Russell drew a two-out walk and Argomaniz lifted his second home run of the game to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs' starting third baseman now owns six homers in the last 12 games and has connected for two home runs in the same game twice this season (vs. Air Force - April 27).
Argomaniz finished the game going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
After two conventional home runs, Jordan Luplow provided the unconventional method to round all four bases in the seventh. Luplow snapped out of a 0-for-10 slump with a stand-up inside-the-park home run on a two-strike count, scoring Jake Alvarez to open an 8-1 lead.
The inside the park homer resulted in Luplow's ninth home run of the season. The last Bulldog to record an inside-the-park home run came on April 5, 2009 by Trent Soares - also against Bakersfield.
In the ninth, Bakersfield's Sheldon Williams hit a bases clearing RBI double against Jake Shull with two outs to bring the Runners within four runs. Shull secured the win two batters later.
The Bulldogs used six pitchers in all on a staff night with not one Bulldog pitching more than two innings. Tim Borst started the game and pitched one inning. Garrett Mundell (4-0) was awarded the win in two innings worked. The junior faced the minimum and struck out two.
A shaky start for CSUB starting pitcher Carter allowed the Bulldogs first four batters to reach safely to begin Tuesday's game - two walks and two singles. Clean-up hitter, Taylor Ward hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and put Fresno State out in front 2-0. Carter (2-2) was charged with the loss.
Fresno State will have one day off before they host San Diego State for a three-game Mountain West conference series to close the regular season. The final home stand begins on Thursday vs. the Aztecs at 6:35 p.m., the series continues on Friday at 6:35 p.m. and concludes with a Senior Day celebration on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
