FRESNO, Calif. - From start to finish Thursday night at Beiden Field, it was all San Diego State as they defeated the Bulldog baseball team 9-2 to take game one of the three-game series that will wrap up the 2014 regular season. With the loss, Fresno State locked itself into the No. 5 seed for the Mountain West Baseball Tournament.
The Aztecs jumped in front 9-0 after the first four innings of the game and knocked out Fresno State starter Jordan Brink after just 3.0 innings of work.
San Diego State used a three-hit, two-walk top of the first to jump in front of the Bulldogs 2-0 to start the game. The first three batters reached safely to lead off the frame, and then cleanup hitter Brad Haynal hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score the first run. Brad Zavala hit an RBI double on the next at-bat to score the second run.
The speedy Greg Allen hit a triple down the left field line after the first out was retired in the second, Tim Zier manufactured the third run of the game with an RBI single to bring home Allen on the next at-bat.
SDSU increased its lead to 5-0 in the top of the third as Steven Pallares took a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run, his first of the season. Brink did not return after the third, exiting the earliest he has all season in a start - eight hits, five runs (all earned), two walks and one strikeout.
Dillon Houser retired the first out of the fourth, but the next four batters would reach safely - one run scored on a wild pitch. Blake Quinn inherited a bases load jam in relief of Houser, he surrendered a two-run RBI single to Ryan Muno, cousin of former Bulldog Danny Muno, and then Tyler Adkinson hit a sacrifice fly to score the fourth run of the inning. All four runs were charged to Houser.

Trent Woodward lifted a single to left, Brody Russell drew a walk next in line, and then Jordan Luplow hit an RBI single to score Woodward, each hit was against two outs. Derby's very next pitch was wild, allowing Russell to score.
Quinn closed out the remainder of the game for Fresno State and allowed just one more hit throughout the rest of the game, following the first at-bat he faced in the fourth. Quinn worked 5.2 innings, allowed two hits, two walks and did not allow a run. A bright spot looking forward for the pitching staff as they move toward the postseason.
