    SACRAMENTO, Calif, - After trailing for seven innings the Fresno State baseball team scored three runs in the eighth and ninth innings to lead 8-3. But the Bulldogs could not hang onto the lead as Sacramento State scored six runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning to win 9-8 on Friday afternoon.

    The loss drops Fresno State to 31-26 and 19-10 in WAC while Sacramento State improved to 22-30 and 13-15 in conference play.

    Fresno State had 15 hits led by 3 for 4 days from Erik Wetzel, Tommy Mendonca and Jordan Ribera. Danny Muno, Alan Ahmady and Ryan Overland each had two hits. Overland and Ahmady both had two RBIs.

    Sacramento State took a 1-0 lead in third inning but the Bulldogs came back in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 after a solo homerun by Wetzel over the left field fence.

    The Hornets then led 3-1 after the sixth inning. Ribera, who reach base on a two-out single to centerfield, brought the Bulldogs within a run when he scored from second off a single from Muno in the seventh inning.

    Fresno State then took a 5-3 lead after the eighth inning and added three more runs in the top of the ninth to lead 8-3. The Dogs combined for seven hits in the two innings.

    The scoring started in the eighth when Wetzel reached base via walk. Then with one out, Ahmady walked and Mendonca doubled down the right field line, scoring Wetzel. Overland then gave the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead with a single to right field that scored Ahmady and Mendonca.

    In the ninth Ribera and Muno led off with back-to-back singles. Gavin Hedstrom then scored Trent Soares, who was pinch running for Ribera, on a sacrifice fly to up the Bulldog lead to 6-3. After a single by Wetzel, Ahmady had a two-out RBI single to give Fresno State the five-run lead.

     

     

    In the bottom of the ninth inning Sacramento State scored all six runs with two outs and won the game on walk-off grand slam by Brent Hottman.
