LAS VEGAS - The Fresno State baseball team could not escape elimination on Friday afternoon as Nevada jumped on the Bulldogs for six runs over the first three innings, seizing the games' momentum. By the time of the final out, the 'Dogs season ended with a 10-2 defeat in its first elimination game after falling to UNLV the night before in the double elimination Mountain West Championship Tournament at Wilson Stadium.
When the Bulldogs scored their first and only two runs in the fifth, Nevada had already opened up a six run lead. The Wolf Pack scored three runs in the first, plated two more in the second and one more in the third.
In the fifth, Fresno State loaded the bases and made its best threat to bring themselves back into the game. Once the Bulldogs juiced the bases, it ended Michael Fain's outing after 4.1 innings of work. Austin Guibor pinch hit to counter the pitching change and came through with an RBI single, scoring the 'Dogs first run. Jordan Luplow drew a bases loaded walk next in line and the Bulldogs were within four, with the tying run, Trent Woodward, coming to bat with one out. Woodward grounded into a double play that ended the threat.
Nevada went on to tack four more runs on the scoreboard - single runs in each the sixth and seventh, and two more in the eighth.
Fresno State used five different pitchers after junior starter William Munro (2-2) lasted one inning and gave up three earned runs on three hits after facing the first eight batters of the game. Jimmy Lambert produced one out in the second as Munro's reliever, surrendering two earned runs, Derick Velazquez steadied the game for Fresno State as he entered in the second and pitched the next 4.1 innings.
Due to Fain lasting just 4.1 innings, Colby Blueberg (4-2) earned the win in relief. Blueberg earned his fourth victory of the season, giving up just two hits against 16 batters to close out the game.
The Bulldogs end the 2014 season with an overall 28-29 record after earning one win and dropping two in the Mountain West Championship Tournament.
