RENO, Nev. - To begin WAC Tournament play the No. 1 seed Fresno State (32-27, 17-7) Bulldogs took care of business in day one defeating No. 6 seed Sacramento State (17-38, 10-14) by a 10-2 score Thursday afternoon at Peccole Park. Right hander second team all-WAC Clayton Allison threw his first complete game allowing just two runs on six hits and marking six strikeouts.
The Bulldogs began the game down 1-0 in the top of the second to the Hornets but scored 4 runs in the bottom of the inning on four hits. To highlight the inning Erik Wetzel hit a deep left field ball back to the warning track scoring two runs.
To cut the lead in half Sacramento State scored one run in the top of the seventh on a home run by Gabe Jacobo at 4-2.
Brian Lapin and the Bulldogs put the game out of reach with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning by clearing the bases with a grand slam to left field giving the Bulldogs a six run lead at 8-2. It was Lapin's fifth home run of the season and first grand slam. Ozzie Lewis brought the ninth runner to home on a triple to right center. The last run of the game floated home when Steve Detwiler knocked a ground ball through the right side scoring David Hernandez.
On the day Dan Grubb went 2-for-3 with two singles and Loren Storey went 2-for-4 with two singles and one RBI.
Fresno State will play the loser of game three against Louisiana Tech or San Jose State tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Peccole Park.
