`Dogs Season Ends In Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - After defying the odds in Hawai'i to win an automatic berth to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the Fresno State baseball team's season ended after falling to San Diego State, 4-1.
"Another good college baseball game and we came out on the wrong end of it," said head coach Mike Batesole. "Both teams pitched very well, both teams played outstanding defense. They got a couple home runs and you have to give them credit."
This is the first elimination game that the Bulldogs have lost in the last two years. The `Dogs are 13-1 in season ending games since their historic run in 2008 that ended in the program's first national title.
The three Bulldog seniors, Gavin Hedstrom, Danny Grubb and Holden Sprague will go out as one of the most decorated classes in school history after winning three WAC regular season titles, four WAC Tournament titles and a national championship.
"I am really proud of my teammates. There is no reason to hang our hands because it's over because it is not really just the baseball aspect is," said Senior Holden Sprague.
Sophomore Danny Muno went 3-for-4 recording his 25th double against San Diego State starter Tyler Lavigne.
All-American Tom Mendonca got the first hit of the game against Lavigne in the first inning with an infield single.
San Diego State scored first with a two-run home run from Brandon Meredith giving the Aztecs the lead, 2-0.
The Bulldogs got out of a jam in the first inning turning their xx double play of the year. The Aztecs hit the ball right to Mendonca, who easily made the play at third base and then threw the runner out a first base for the third out of the inning.
Junior Matt Morse started for the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Irvine. Morse entered the season with a 4-2 record and a 4.54 ERA.
He sat down the Aztecs batters 1-2-3 in the second inning. Morse got a huge a huge out for the Bulldogs in the fifth inning after striking out Cory Vaughn.
The Bulldogs got out a bases loaded scare in the third inning with sophomore Danny Muno fielding a 6-3 out to first base.
In the fourth inning, Right fielder Brennan Gowens reached on a fielder's choice. Designated hitter Kenny Wise tripled to left center field passed the diving center fielder and Gowens scored as the `Dogs trailed, 2-1.
The Aztecs extended their lead, 4-1, with two runs making their way across home plate.
Senior Holden Sprague entered the game in relief on the mound in the fifth inning. The Right hander sat down the Aztec batters in a row. Sprague sat down seven consecutive Aztec batters.
The Aztecs held on to win, 4-1, eliminating the Bulldogs from the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The winner's bracket featuring UC Irvine and Virginia face off at 8 p.m. tonight.
