Dogs Downed by Anteaters
June 3, 2011
LOS ANGELES - The NCAA opener for the Dogs didn't go the way the Fresno State baseball team wanted. The good news for the Dogs is that tomorrow is a new day.
UC Irvine capitalized on two Bulldog errors and a three-run homer to take an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and Fresno State never covered in a 12-6 loss in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Los Angeles Regional played at historic Jackie Robinson Stadium.
In the double elimination format, the Bulldogs will advance to play at 2 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the UCLA vs. San Francisco game.
"We didn't play like we were capable today," said head coach Mike Batesole. "This is not how we've played all year. We didn't get the ball down when we needed to and didn't play defense like we are capable. We didn't hit the ball like we have this year. We will be fine tomorrow. It's an elimination game and we've been there before."
WAC Freshman of the Year Aaron Judge recorded the first hit of the day for the Bulldogs with a single up the middle in the second inning, his 67th of the season. The outfielder continues to lead the team in hitting with a .364.
The Anteaters led off the bottom of the second inning with a triple and that was as far as he made it. Center fielder Brennan Gowens threw the runner out at home plate preventing UC Irvine from scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Back-to-back singles from infielders Pat Hutcheson and Danny Muno put two runners aboard in the third inning. Gowens grounded out to the Eaters shortstop, but allowed a Bulldog run cross home plate. A fielder's choice brought in another run as the Dogs trailed 5-2.
UC Irvine added five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings extending its lead 10-2 over the Bulldogs.
Senior pitcher Greg Gonzalez suffered his first loss of the season.
In the fifth inning, Hutcheson hit his second base knock of the day back to the pitcher. The Bulldogs recorded five hits against UC Irvine starter Matt Summers, who hurled a no-hitter in his last outing. WAC Player of the Year Dusty Robinson drove in a run with a single to left center as the Dogs trailed 10-3.
After giving up a leadoff single in the sixth inning, the Dogs defense cleared the bases with a double play. The Bulldogs have turned 62 double plays this season.
In the ninth inning, an error by the Anteaters pitcher allowed a Bulldog run to score and advanced two more runners into scoring position. Muno hit a singled to the gap in right center, his second hit of the day, driving two more runs and the final score of 12-6.
In the second game of the Los Angeles Regional, UCLA will play San Francisco at 6 p.m. PT.
