Fresno State Baseball Begins Season with Busy Weekend
Jan. 10, 2007 FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog baseball team will kick off the new year with opening extravaganzas and festivities starting Friday, January 26 where they will host a celebrity golf tournament at Brighton Crest Golf and Country Club, the 20th Annual Double Play Dinner and the annual Alumni game. Highlighting the dinner, three all-time great Fresno State baseball players will be welcomed back as their jerseys will be retired, including Jimy Williams (1963-64), Terry Pendleton (1981-82) and Truman "Tex" Clevenger, (1951-53). Many other former Fresno State Alumni will be in attendance including pitcher Jeff Weaver, who won three postseason games and clinched game five for the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. The activities will begin on the golf course with a shotgun start following a continental breakfast. This event is available to the public on a first come first serve basis. The cost per person is $185. Please contact Stan Busch at (559) 346-0320 for more details. The 20th Annual Double Play Dinner will be held at Pardini's on the evening of Jan. 26. Members of the 2006 Bulldog team will be awarded their WAC Championship rings, the 2007 squad will be introduced and a jersey retirement ceremony will be held. The cost of the event will be $40 for Dugout Club Members, $45 for Non-Members and $40 for Sponsor-a-Player's dinner. (Donors will be recognized on the Baselines). Saturday, Jan. 27, will feature an "Old Timers" game at 11:30 a.m. followed by the annual alumni game where the 2007 Fresno State Bulldogs will begin their quest to defend their WAC title. The Alumni team will feature many former Bulldog players who have gone on to play professionally. The Alumni will play the 2007 'Dogs at the conclusion of the Old Timers game. Admission to both games is free. "Our annual golf tournament, Double Play dinner at Pardini's and the Alumni game will be extra special in 2007," said Head Coach Mike Batesole. "Three all-time great former Fresno State baseball players will be welcomed back as we look forward to a great weekend.It is great to have our Alumni around all week." Truman "Tex" Clevenger, P - (1963-64) At Fresno State in 1953, Truman Clevenger led the Bulldogs with an 10-3 win-loss record and a 1.37 ERA. Clevenger also pitched a nine-inning no-hitter in 1953 against Pacific and aided his cause at the plate by going 5-for-5 with a pair of triples. In that same year Clevenger earned All-CCAA first team selection. He also led the team in hitting with a .451 batting average. The Visalia, Calif. product finished his first professional season with 16 wins and 2 losses. At age 22, Clevenger earned a promotion to the major leagues with the Red Sox. In that year the Bulldogs won their fourth consecutive conference title for the first time in school history and set what was then a school record with 22 consecutive wins. Pendleton was a three-time Gold Glove third baseman in 1987, 1989 and 1992. Pendleton was also awarded the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1991. Other accomplishments include NL Batting Average Leader in 1991, two-time National League hits leader and 20-Home Run seasons in 1991 and 1992. He played 14 years in the majors recording stints with St Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals. Terry Pendleton - 3B, STL/ATL/FLA/KC/CIN

In 1952 his team was 33-11 and allowed to the NCAA Tournament. In 1953 he was 27-11 with a second place finish in the conference. Williams was inducted into the Fresno State Hall of Fame in 2004. Williams is the current bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies and a former manager of other Major League Baseball teams which included stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.
