FRESNO, Calif. - Baseball America released its Mountain West preview Friday that included projections, players of the year, and top prospects. For Fresno State it was highlighted by Jesse Medrano being named as its Preseason Freshman of the Year and having the most top prospects of all the MW schools.
As stated by Baseball America, "Medrano, a former high school football standout, brings an aggressive mentality, valuable leadership skills and good baseball instincts to the middle of the diamond."
Medrano enters his first year at Fresno State coming from Clayton Valley Charter High School (Concord, Calif.) where he was a four-year letterwinner. Medrano was named the Diablo Valley Athletic League MVP, a MaxPreps Medium School Second-Team All-State selection and to the Contra Costa Times All-East Bay team his senior season. He owned a .392 batting average and produced 38 hits, 27 RBIs, 25 runs, nine doubles and two home runs with 97 at bats.
The Bulldogs are also being recognized for what they believe is the most talented team in the Mountain West.
As stated by Baseball America, "the Bulldogs might have more pro talent than any other team in the MW, and they have significant upside this spring if sophomores like C Taylor Ward and CF Brody Russell take steps forward as hoped."
The Bulldogs season opener is a week from Friday, Feb. 14, at UC Irvine. Following the 'Dogs three-game series on the road, they return to Beiden Field to open the season at home on Tuesday, Feb. 18 versus Grand Canyon.
