FRESNO, Calif.- When Fresno State defeated Georgia 6-1 in game three of the NCAA College World Series to win the 2008 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, it capped one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of Fresno State collegiate athletics. Friday night, that team was enshrined to the prestigious Wall of Fame.
The Dugout Club, the official Fresno State baseball sport club in association with the Bulldog Foundation, held its 27th annual Double Play dinner at Clovis Veterans Memorial District. Each year the club hosts a fun-filled weekend that kicks off the baseball season.
The night started with assistant coach Steve Rousey introducing nine returning Academic All-Mountain West student-athletes - Jake Alvarez, Tim Borst, Jordan Brink, Jordan Luplow, Garrett Mundell, William Munro, Brody Russell, Taylor Tempel and Derick Velazquez.
Soon thereafter the rest of the 2014 team took the stage and were recognized for their work as a team in the classroom this past fall. The team registered a team GPA of 3.24, the highest among all men's teams at Fresno State.
The 2014 baseball team, which features sophomore pitcher Blake Quinn, a Freshman All-American pitcher and MW Co-Freshman of the Year from a season ago. Chris Mariscal, a 2013 second-team All-MW selection, along with Brink, a two-time 2013 MW Pitcher of the Week selection and a host of other returning talent.
The 'Dogs welcome 18 new faces to this season's team and took what some might call a rookie hazing as the newcomers provided the audience with a "dance off." Jake Stone took home what the players called the 2014 Silver Feet award.
While everyone is exciting about starting the season in one week at UC Irvine, the main attraction of the evening were the "Wonderdogs" from the 2008 National Championship team. Each member from the historic team was presented with their Wall of Fame plaque by Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro, Athletic Director Thomas Boeh, Head Coach Mike Batesole and Dugout Club President Sharlene Gomes.
