The Diamond Dish
The Fresno State baseball team will host Bakersfield this Wednesday at Beiden Field for one of two pairing between the two schools this season. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.

The Bulldogs are currently 4-1 in the middle of a nine-game homestand. The 'Dogs are fresh off a series sweep of conference foe Nevada last weekend, while they split their midweek matchups with Grand Canyon (W) and Sacramento State (L). Bakersfield is the third opponent from the Western Athletic Conference they will have faced to date this season.

A season ago, Fresno State defeated the 'Runners 7-4 at Beiden Field on April 30 at Beiden Field in the final game of four midweek contests throughout the 2013 season. Prior to the win, Bakersfield had been victors of four-straight dating back to the 2012 season. In all, Bakersfield leads the all-time series 12-11 in what is a very young rivalry between the CA-99 schools that dates back to just 2009.

On Monday, designated hitter/catcher Taylor Ward was announced as the Mountain West baseball Player of the Week for games played Feb. 17-23. In the five-game span, Ward averaged a .389 batting average with seven hits, four runs scored and eight RBIs. In addition, he hit his first home run of the season and finished the week with a .611 slugging percentage. For the week, Ward had at least one RBI and one hit in each of the Bulldogs five games during the stretch.

Freshman LHP Fred Schlichtholz is projected to receive his first career start at the mound for the 'Dogs while junior RHP James Barragan gets the start for CSUB.

The Roadrunners (5-3) went 2-1 last weekend at home against Towson after losing a pair of midweek games at UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine.
